Winged

by Cerrie Burnell

Tristan Bates Theatre

Winged is a very modern fairytale for children about embracing difference and learning to get along.

As a work-in-progress the production was an excellent opportunity for me to experiment with shape and colour, and to work for a very different type of audience; children have fewer preconceptions about theatre, something that's interesting and disconcerting when encountered for the first time.

Gaelle and Anna's costumes were largely responsible for transforming the Tristan Bates' studio space into the four corners of FairyLand, with a little bit of help from some rather vibrant colour in the lighting. The action moves quickly from place to place, so the priority with lighting was to make clear distinctions between both the different physical locations and also a combination of mood and magicality.
