Nutshell Theatre Company
Nutshell's fourth project was a sweet little story about growing up and moving on. Two young couples dabble with drug-induced sillyness; one of them dies, the others must come to terms with it.
The design for Stars largely came together as a result of working with both Lucinda's set and the bittersweet/tragic mix of the script. The magic and hazy warmth of the long first scene gives way to the small, contained moments that make up the aftermath. A tree of bent steel, the vivid green of the floor and gently glowing lightbulbs created the bulk of the environment for this story. I also created a projection of the deceased Suzanne that slept as part of the set through the second half of the play.
Stars ran at the Traverse Theatre during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2006, then hopped across to the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow. We got good audiences and a good reception, but I don't really think it was 'Fringe wacky' enough to be too successful.
